Exercising with Your Dog

Exercising with Your Dog

Exercising with your dog is beneficial for their health and enhancing your bond. Before you get started, consider your dog’s breed, age, size, and fitness level to determine what kind of exercise is best for your dog. Consult your veterinarian to make sure your dog is in good health before beginning a new exercise program.

  • On-leash walks are a great form of exercise for dogs of all ages and activity levels. You can start with brief walks and build their endurance over time.

  • Running or jogging with your dog can be a good fit for certain breeds and age levels.  Puppies who are still growing shouldn’t put that kind of pressure on their joints and certain breeds of dogs, especially short nose dogs, don’t have the physical stamina to withstand rigorous activity.

  • Playing fetch outside with a toy or ball is another great exercise option. Make sure the ball cannot fit entirely inside your dog’s mouth to prevent the risk of it getting lodged in their throat.

  • Swimming is a low-impact way for your dog to exercise. Some dogs are natural-born swimmers while others do not enjoy swimming. If this is an exercise you think your dog may enjoy, start off in a quiet, shallow body of water to get your dog acclimated and make sure to supervise your dog at all times.

Exercise is essential to your dog’s health and well-being and helps both you and your dog lead a happy, well-balanced life.
