Pet Safety Tips for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend will soon be upon us and if your plans include picnics, cookouts, or trips to the beach, consider these activities and your pet’s safety before the holiday weekend festivities begin.

  • Avoid sharing table scraps. Any changes in your pet’s diet can cause an upset stomach and foods like grapes, onions, and raisins are toxic to pets. Also, make sure the trash is securely stored to prevent pets from consuming any leftovers, including dangerous items like corncobs, bones, alcohol, and kabob skewers.
  • Supervise the grill at all times and make sure to clean up any spills as soon as possible. Keep pets far away from the heat and flame of the grill to prevent any accidents.
  • Make sure there is a shady spot like a tree or picnic table for your pet to retreat to and have plenty of fresh water readily available to help prevent heat stroke.

  • Be cautious of citronella candles, insect repellent, weed killers, and other pesticides that are toxic to your pet. If your pet is bothered by outdoor bugs, contact your vet about pet formulated insect repellent.
  • Secure any gates or exits to prevent your pet from accidentally escaping. Check your pet’s ID or microchip to verify the information is up-to-date and the tag is easy to read.

We wish you and your pets a very safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
