Responsible Pet Owners Month

Responsible Pet Owners Month

February is National Responsible Pet Owners Month. Here are a few tips for being a responsible pet parent.

Routine Wellness Care – Regular wellness visits with your veterinarian help them to assess your pet’s overall health and intercept any preventable conditions before they become serious.

Diet and Exercise – Feeding your pet a well-balanced and nutritious diet and making sure they get plenty of exercise sets the foundation for a long, happy and healthy life for your pet.

Pet-Proof Your Home – Pets are naturally curious, so it is important to make sure you avoid bringing potentially hazardous items into your home. Check out ASPCA’s site for more information on the plants, food and household items that can be potential threats to your pets.

Grooming and Hygiene – Regular grooming and baths keep your pet’s coat and skin healthy. Brushing your pet’s coat allows you to examine their coat and skin and notice any changes that may appear such as lumps and bumps. Daily teeth brushing helps keep your pet from developing dental disease which can spread to the heart and other organs.

ID Tags and Microchip – Make sure your pet has identification. Without proper identification, 90% of lost pets never get returned home. If you choose to microchip your pet, remember to keep your contact information up-to-date. If the information is not current, your pet’s rescuer will not be able to reach you.

Training and Socialization – Obedience training helps keep your pet safe and strengthens the bond between you and your pet.  Proper socialization enables your pet to be friendlier and more content.
