Preparing for a Pet Sitter

Preparing for a Pet Sitter

March 4-10 is Professional Pet Sitters Week. Hiring a pet sitter can be beneficial for our pets as it’s easier for them to stick to their normal routines and it allows them to stay at home with familiar sights, sounds, and smells. Here are some tips to consider when preparing your home for your pet sitter.

  • Put all of your pet’s essential items such as medication, food, treats and leashes in a central location so they are readily available for your pet sitter.

  • Leave instructions on your pet’s feeding and medications schedule.
  • Inform your pet sitter of any current or previous medical conditions that have affected your pet so your pet sitter can better recognize any symptoms while you’re away.
  • Check your pet’s ID to make sure all the information is up-to-date.
  • Make sure your pet first aid kit is stocked and share the location with your sitter.
  • Leave your phone numbers and travel information for your pet sitter. Provide the contact information for your veterinarian, emergency vet hospital, and a local backup emergency contact.
  • Notify your veterinarian that you will be out of town and give them your consent to allow your pet sitter to seek treatment for your pet if necessary. Also, you may want to leave your credit card number on file at the vet in case of emergency.
  • Let your pet sitter know if there are certain areas of your home that are off limits to your pet.

Keeping these preparation tips in mind will help ensure your pet sitter has all of the necessities to help care for your pet while you’re away.
